About Randy and Maureen & Just Home Cooks

Randy

I grew up in Tucson, Arizona, one of 10 children, the 3rd oldest. With a large family like that, you learn to cook at an early age. Each of us had our chores to do, one of mine was cooking.  I love cooking so much I worked my way through both volumes of Mastering the Art of French Cooking.

Maureen

I was raised in Levittown, New York., one of 4 children and the only girl.  My Mom was not thrilled with  baking so she was glad when I started to bake and enjoy it. I love family traditions, so I tried hard to learn our families dishes, as well as dishes from friends.  Note, my Dad cooked, and my brothers also learned to cook, each of us claim to make the best "grandma's meatballs".

Just Home Cooks

Both of us grew up in an era where families cooked and ate together. The family meal was a staple - a time to gather and share about our lives. Good to great home cooked meals made our day.

Today so many people eat out (which we love too), grab a pre-prepared meal at a store (in a pinch we do too) and eat frozen dinners (well - we rarely do that).  We see so many people eat on the run, never taking the time out to cook and enjoy a meal with their family or friends.  Our goal is to encourage people to take the time to cook and spend time with family and friends enjoying a family meal.

FAQ

Neither of us had formal training. Randy was one of 10 children, and as the third oldest he was one of the first to help with the cooking.  Maureen, one of four children but the only girl, was the baker of the family.  We have a love for cooking and have learned from family, trial and error cookbooks, and websites like this one.
No problem!  Many of our recipes come from looking at what we have in our kitchen and then coming up with something new, or at least new to us, or use to try to replicate something we have had elsewhere.  We focus on combining good, compatible and fresh (if possible) ingredients.  We list some ingredients as optional, but many ingredients can be skipped or substituted,  It will change the flavor, but you may like it better. As an example, we have a friend that hates cilantro. When he is coming, if we have cilantro in a dish, we usually add the cilantro last, after we put some in a separate dish for him.   It works! Note, when we start adding baked breads, cakes and the like, you need to take more care as some ingredients are required for the cake to rise....!
